Income

Total income for the LCD international group in the financial year 1st November 2005 to 31st October 2006 was £2,141,579. The majority of funds were sourced in the UK and South Africa, from contracted work with Eastern CapeDepartment of Education. The Big Lottery Fund (BIG) International Grants provided funding for LCD’s work in Ghana and Uganda and there was continued support from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Nuffield Foundation, USAID and a number of other trusts, foundations and university funding groups. A significant three year grant has also enabled the formation of a HIV/AIDS Unit based in South Africa and will fund the roll out of HIV/AIDS Action Planning work to school communities across sub-Saharan.

The Global Teachers Programme has been made possible by grants from the Department for International Development (DFID) Development Awareness Fund, HSBC Global Education Trust, the Scottish Executive Education Department and the Department for Education and Skills. The London Challenge and the Educational Institute of Scotland have
also supported the programme. Donations from events and individual donors in the UK grew dramatically. 2006 saw 676 students hitch-hiking their way to Morocco and Prague to raise over £300,000 for LCD’s work in Africa.

Expenditure

2006 saw LCD begin work in Malawi as well as in new districts in Uganda. LCD also established partner organisations in Ireland and Scotland, increasing the LCD international group to seven members. Total expenditure for the year was £1,989,991.

Over half of our spending in 2005/6 was directed to training and project costs in Africa and helped LCD work with over 1000 teachers, 500 schools and 15 district offices. The expansion of LCD’s activities in Uganda following BIG’s £500,000 grant, meant new staff members were recruited to ensure our work remains at the highest possible quality. In addition to this, 16% of total spending allowed 47 teachers from the

UK to be placed in rural schools in Ghana, Malawi, South Africa and Uganda, through LCD’s Global Teachers Programme. The year also saw investment in new areas such as developing the School Performance Review in all southern countries as well as the expansion of LCD’s HIV/AIDS work, through the establishment of the HIV/AIDS Unit based in South Africa. Office and administration costs across the group increased due to the establishment of three new offices and the subsequent recruitment costs for new staff members in Ireland, Malawi and Scotland.

LCD is a group of partner organizations working together with a shared vision. Each partner is registered as a separate entity in the country it is based.
