Ghana Programme: Location
Click on the map below to find out about the regions in which LCD works.
Upper East Region
LCD Ghana
currently works in three districts (out of eight) of the Upper East Region in
northern Ghana; the Bolgatanga Municipality, Talensi-Nabdam District and Kassena
Nankana District.
The region is extremely hot and dry and is mainly savanna and semi-arid
land. In 2002 the population of the region was 964,500, just 5% of Ghana's total
population.
The regions economy is based on agriculture, primarily cattle and cereals
such as millet, sorghum and rice. The average income is very low and is
dependent on having a successful harvest each year.
LCD works with over 70 schools in the region, which are all under-resourced
and extremely remote. Being located so far from Ghana's capital Accra, these
schools have often missed out on previous development efforts. The LCD project
office is based in the capital of the region, Bolgatanga.
Ashanti Region
LCD Ghana
works in the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma (BAK) district in the Ashanti region of
central Ghana. The climate is much more tropical than in the north of the
country and this gives rise to the heavily forested hills and the many streams
and rivers. The Ashanti region produces most of Ghana's cocoa, minerals and
timber.
Kumasi is the affluent capital of the Ashanti region, and BAK is the
adjoining district to the South East. Despite being so close to Kumasi, BAK is
the poorest of all eighteen districts in the region.
As with most of
the rest of the district, the predominant livelihood is farming and family
members often provide the main source of labour. The majority make their living
from growing crops such as plantain, cassava, maize and various fruit and
vegetables, some of which they sell. Income is often seasonal and some families
struggle to make ends meet at certain times of year.
LCD has been working with 40 schools in the Ashanti region since 2003.
