School Sponsorship

School Sponsorship is a unique way for individuals, companies and schools to make a difference to a particular school in Africa, through regular donations.

Sponsor a School NOW!

What is School Sponsorship?

Sponsoring a school in Africa is a unique way to make a lasting difference. You will be helping as many as 1,000 children get a better education each year. As the school improves, so will life for the whole community. Through our feedback reports you will be able to see the difference yourself.

Why is it needed?

In an ideal world all children would have the opportunity to succeed at school. Unfortunately, in many parts of Africa the reality is very different.

Schools in rural areas face many challenges: chronic poverty, rural isolation, and the impact of HIV and AIDS. Children travel long distances to attend poorly equipped schools, with no books, huge class sizes and few trained teachers. Without education it is incredibly hard for any community to escape the cycle of poverty or to fight the scourge of HIV and AIDS.

What will my money do?

Changes that make a real difference

Your sponsorship helps pay for annual grants for your school. The school decides which of its needs are most critical. They might desperately need a classroom, library books or even a well. So your money is spent where it is needed most.

Changes that last

It is not only grants that make a difference. Link Community Development (LCD) provides lots of accompanying training and support. This means school leaders are themselves equipped with the skills they need to drive their school's development, long into the future.

Changes that people want

LCD helps schools to involve the community in school life and decision-making. Parents and others raise funds to help the school qualify for its grant. This means everyone has a say, and everyone can take pride in the school's development.

How much does it cost?

Sponsoring a school in Africa costs just 68p a day - that's £21 a month.

80% of your sponsorship is used to help schools in Africa develop. 20% is used to increase public awareness and to raise more funds for LCD's projects in Africa.

What do Sponsors receive?

As a School Sponsor you will receive a welcome pack which includes a colour profile of your school, a letter from our patron Desmond Tutu and more information on LCD's work in Africa. As well as this you will get annual feedback about your school's progress and lots more!

What our School Sponsors say...

"Being a School Sponsor with LCD has given me a real insight into the struggles and achievements of an African primary school. The relatively modest amount of money that I give each month goes SUCH a long way - I feel that I really make a difference!"

Jo Hallett, LCD supporter

"We were particularly impressed with the practical help LCD gives to schools in Africa and the big impact we could make from a relatively small amount of sponsorship. We now have information about the school on a noticeboard and post LCD's annual updates there.

As well as being something all our employees have been engaged with, it is also something we talk about to potential employees. From a corporate perspective school sponsorship through LCD is therefore something we feel we should do as a socially responsible company and at the same time brings benefits in terms of employee engagement and attraction."

Pam Calvert, Managing Director of Communications Management

Can my school in the UK sponsor a school in Africa?

Now you can! Link Community Development’s (LCD’s) School Sponsorship Scheme allows schools and nurseries to support education projects in Africa.

Sponsoring a school in Ghana, Malawi, South Africa or Uganda will help thousands of boys and girls in Africa get the quality education they deserve whilst also developing your school’s knowledge about other cultures.

“Through School Sponsorship, we are able to target our fundraising to a particular project that we would like to support. Our pupils feel that they make a real difference, and have a greater understanding about life in a very different country”.

Pam Rutter, Teacher, King Edward VI High School

Case Study: Kigumba Primary School, Uganda

Kigumba Primary School in the Masindi District of Uganda is sponsored by Janet Woodhouse in the UK. In 2001 Kigumba had 1,217 pupils but just 10 classrooms. In such cramped conditions it was virtually impossible for the children to get a good education.

With support from LCD the school created a Development Plan which determined its priorities. LCD also encouraged the staff to engage their local community in supporting the school's development. Parents managed to raise the equivalent of the school's budget through different events, something they would never have thought possible before.

Kigumba was then eligible for a grant from LCD. This was used to help fund a new classroom block, training for teachers on using teaching aids and a tree planting project which should provide the school with a sustainable source of income. Everyone at the school is now optimistic about the future.

"As a lecturer I know the value of education. I am delighted that in some way I can make a difference."

Janet Woodhouse, School Sponsor

Kigumba is one of over 100 schools in Masindi which LCD supports. Since starting work in this district, children's test results have improved enormously. Local district staff attribute the improvement to LCD's unique approach.

LCD's projects elsewhere in Africa are achieving similar results.

"Our school has improved both academically and in our relationship with parents and the community."

Headteacher, Uganda
