Irish Global Teachers 2009

In 2009, the Global Teachers Programme is being run by Link Community Development.

Your involvement

Once you are selected to be a Global Teacher your involvement will be for 15 months (April 2009-June 2010), involving a five week placement in a rural Ugandan school between the 6th July to 10th Aug. On placement Global Teachers will be supporting, and sharing skills and expertise with peers in areas of school leadership and management, and literacy and numeracy teaching and learning. The fee for the programme is €1,800 and training weekends in Ireland, international flights, transport to your school, accommodation and food will be covered within this fee. There will be a training weekend in both April and June to prepare you for your placement, a training weekend in Sept after your placement to debrief and discuss how you would like to share your experience with your class/school/community and a graduation weekend in June of the following year.

Irish Global Teachers on placement in Uganda in 2008

On 8th of July six enthusiastic and very excited Irish Global Teachers boarded a plane for Kamwenge, the capital of Kamwenge district in the Rwenzori region of Uganda. For the following 5 weeks Kamwenge district became their home, where each teacher lived with a local Ugandan family and worked in a local school. The Irish teachers were involved in working with the teachers and principals at their Ugandan schools on school administration, classroom management and literacy issues.

"It has been an experience of a lifetime, and a great opportunity to develop my own teaching skills. The programme is extremely well organised, LCD has thought of everything.” Aoife Kelleher

"Our host families welcomed us with open arms. It was a wonderful experience to work with such enthusiastic, dedicated and hard working teachers.” Fiona Maguire.

Scottish Global Teachers 2009

In 2009, the Global Teachers Programme is being run as a partnership between Link Community Development and Learning and Teaching Scotland.

Your involvement

Once you are selected to be a Global Teacher your involvement will be for around one year (April 2009-March 2010), involving a four week placement Malawi in July when you will live and work within a rural Malawian community. On placement Global Teachers will be supporting, and sharing skills and expertise with peers in areas of school leadership and management, and literacy and numeracy teaching and learning.

Global Teachers are provided with comprehensive training and support before, during and after the visit to Malawi. The programme is carefully designed to be of mutual and equal benefit so that all involved – participants, teachers and schools in Malawi, and Scottish pupils and teachers – can extract maximum benefit from the programme in accordance with their own education and development priorities.
