Sixty-eight Scottish teachers and headteachers have been involved with the Global Teachers Programme since 2003 – 11 were selected for placements in Malawi in 2006 and 17 in 2007. Could you be a Global Teacher in Malawi in 2008?

Global Teachers use and develop their own skills and abilities, working with teachers and headteachers in Malawi, to improve teaching and learning in, and the management and leadership of placement schools.

The 17 Global Teachers who have just returned from Malawi this year worked individually and in small groups to support the development of:

  • Teaching methodologies & classroom management
  • Specific curricular/learning areas
  • School development planning
  • Lesson planning
  • Assessment and evaluation
  • Resource management
  • School management, record keeping and administration

"Where GT's were placed last year you will find positive remarks, and positive contributions in the inspection reports as a result of the Global Teachers Programme."

Mr William Banda, Dedza District Education Manager

"Working and living in rural Malawi was the most humbling and yet inspiring experience I have ever had."

Olive Caldwell, Global Teacher 2007

During their placements, the Global Teachers lived with host families in their homes within the school’s community for five weeks – giving them a real insight into life in Malawi – an extremely valuable experience to take back to Scotland to inform teaching and learning about global issues.

Each Global Teacher carries out at least one piece of follow-up work focused on their own CPD and school improvement, setting up schools partnerships, development education, and integrating global issues into the curriculum.  The latest group to have completed the Global Teachers Programme worked on 20 pieces of work which impacted 44 schools, 360 other teachers, and over 7,000 pupils. This year’s group will be supported to build on this good work, and we hope the next group will do the same – creating a network of teachers and schools around Scotland committed to educating pupils as responsible global citizens.

"My experience here in Malawi has been the richest and most challenging of my life. I will take it with me personally and professionally."

Margaret MacLean, Global Teacher 2007

The Global Teachers Programme is a professional development programme for experienced teachers and headteachers lasting 15 months and an extension of the highly successful Global Teachers Millennium Awards scheme. It includes:

  • A five week placement on a school improvement project in Uganda or Malawi. This takes place from late June to late August 2007.
  • Follow up work in Ireland and Scotland, using the learning from the placement.
  • Comprehensive training and support before, during and after the placement.
